Thinking against the grain: Critical Pedagogy, Popular Education and Revolution

Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, University of Algarve (Faro)

Against the backdrop of escalating global crises since our last conference in May 2023, where societal challenges have intensified and inequalities have deepened, the significance of active citizenship to democracy has become increasingly apparent. In this context, the upcoming congress aims to delve into the crucial role of adult education in fostering democratic revolutions against authoritarian regimes and enabling enduring post-revolutionary transformations. It prompts critical inquiries into the potential of adult education theories, such as critical pedagogy and transformative learning, to drive social change through radical imagination, hope, and courage, while steering clear of the pitfalls of reproducing neoliberal capitalism's individualism. Furthermore, reflections on the interconnectedness of revolution, critical pedagogy, and popular education in relation to ecology and sustainability are encouraged, with an emphasis on cultivating robust social movements. The ADCAL network invites contributions that explore the nature, possibilities, and limitations of adult education in promoting active citizenship and democracy, along with its evolving roles in response to shifting global dynamics and citizenship paradigms.
